Heartfelt greetings to everyone on the arrival of 2025.
People generally make many resolutions at the beginning of a new year and try to implement them in the months ahead. However, it is also true that only a few of these resolutions are actually fulfilled, as we tend to compromise from time to time. In such a situation, seniors too should take some resolutions and ensure that they truly follow through on them.
For us seniors, both today and in the future, there should ideally be just one resolution — to keep ourselves physically and mentally healthy. This can certainly be achieved through strong willpower. We wish to celebrate many more New Years with our loved ones, and to fulfill this one resolution, we must make conscious efforts in our daily lives. Let us reflect on a few actionable points.
We should design our daily routine in a way that is both practical and aligned with our comfort. At times, it becomes difficult to pass the day, especially for those seniors who live alone. Children often move to other cities or countries for work, leaving parents behind. The situation becomes even more challenging when one loses a life partner.
Returning to that one resolution related to health — exercise and yoga must become an integral part of our daily routine. Whether it is summer, winter, or the rainy season, we must exercise regularly. Time must be set aside for it, and having a fixed schedule helps maintain discipline. At this age, however, we should avoid overly strenuous or exhausting exercises.
Similarly, walking as much as possible is highly beneficial. As a part of this year’s resolution, we should decide not to use vehicles for short distances. Whenever possible, we should choose to walk. When visiting a temple or market, try parking a little farther away and walk some distance. Additionally, make it a habit to walk at least a thousand steps after breakfast, lunch, and dinner. No one is watching us — this is a commitment we make to ourselves for our own well-being.
We should also take a pledge of simplicity in our diet. This too is directly connected to health. Throughout our lives, we have enjoyed fried and rich foods, but now it is time to moderate or limit them. Even a slight discomfort in the stomach can affect our entire day. This does not mean we must give up everything completely, but we should become our own doctors and decide what and how much to eat. No one understands our body better than we do.
Along with this health-related resolution, there is another very important aspect — staying socially connected. To remain healthy and happy, we must stay in touch with our friends. Old friends understand us best, and we understand them. Call those friends today with whom you have not spoken for a long time — you will surely feel happy. If some friends live in the same city, they can meet weekly or monthly for interaction and enjoyment. If they are in different cities, such gatherings can be annual. Create WhatsApp groups to stay connected and exchange thoughts. We can also take the initiative to form groups within our housing society or neighborhood among people of similar age and organize regular engaging activities. The positive outcome will be better health and a renewed sense of freshness every day.
You may take many resolutions, but ensure that your health does not become a barrier in fulfilling them. Therefore, this New Year, take one firm resolution — to keep yourself healthy.
