A Circle of Friends Is Essential for Senior Citizens

No one knows when the final moment of life will arrive, but one thing is certain — good friends help us push that moment farther away by filling our lives with joy, companionship, and emotional strength.

There is a very famous book titled The Top Five Regrets of the Dying. In simple words, it speaks about the five things people regret the most at the end of their lives.

This bestselling book, written by Australian author Bronnie Ware, was read by nearly three million people across the world within the very first year of its publication. Bronnie worked for several years in the palliative care section of a hospital, where patients suffering from incurable illnesses such as cancer were cared for and comforted in their final stages of life. Based on her conversations with these elderly patients, she identified the five most common regrets people expressed near the end of their lives.

According to the author, these regrets were:

  • I wish I had lived life according to my own wishes, not according to what others expected from me.
  • I wish I had not worked so hard.
  • I wish I had the courage to express my feelings.
  • I wish I had not lost contact with my friends.
  • I wish I had allowed myself to be happier.

In this article, let us focus only on the fourth regret — “I wish I had not lost contact with my friends.”

We must learn from this and ensure that, in our later years, we do not suffer from the absence of companionship and friendship. Though nobody knows when life will end, it is certain that friends play a major role in keeping us emotionally alive, cheerful, and motivated. Our goal should be to remove the words “I wish” from that regret. Starting today — this very moment — we should reconnect with our friends and strengthen those relationships.

We too have our own circle of friends. Every Saturday evening, we gather at a hotel and spend time chatting and laughing together. It is not necessary that every member attends every week, but we have one unwritten rule — at least half the members must be present, otherwise the meeting stands cancelled. We have been meeting like this for years. In fact, now we eagerly wait for Saturday to arrive.

Let me share an incident. One afternoon, my family and I had gone to a restaurant for lunch. While sitting there, I noticed two elderly women seated at a large table in one corner. Slowly, more women joined them until there were nine in total. They continued chatting, laughing, and enjoying themselves wholeheartedly. Watching their happiness brought joy even to us.

Out of curiosity, I called the waiter and asked whether one of them was celebrating a birthday. The waiter smiled and replied with a very interesting answer. He said they were all retired teachers who met there every week for lunch and spent two or three cheerful hours together.

Similarly, there are many alumni groups of former classmates from schools and colleges spread across different cities. Most of them remain connected through WhatsApp groups, while some also organize regular physical gatherings every month. Whenever old friends meet, the joy of revisiting memories and reliving shared moments is truly unmatched.

At this stage of life, friendship is not merely about passing time. It becomes emotional support, mental therapy, laughter, belongingness, and sometimes even the very reason to remain active and enthusiastic about life.

Family members are undoubtedly important, but friends occupy a special corner of the heart. With friends of the same age group, there is comfort, understanding, and freedom to speak openly without hesitation. They understand our journey because they have walked a similar path themselves.

Therefore, never allow old friendships to fade away. Call your friends, meet them, create groups, travel together, laugh together, and stay connected. A strong circle of friends is not a luxury for senior citizens — it is a necessity for a happy and meaningful life.
